Individual Therapy
Clients who seek out individual therapy usually meet once a week with a cognitive therapist.
Sessions are 45 minutes in length and are proactive in nature. Some clients see results in as
little a 3-4 sessions. Depending upon the significance of the problem, clients may take several
sessions before they see improvements.
Couples and Family Therapy
At times a client's needs are best met when significant partners and family members are included as part of the treatment process. If you are experiencing relationship issues, interpersonal difficulties, or family discord, this treatment option is available at NYCTWC using the scientifically based CBT procedures for these issues.
Psychological Assessment
We offer a wide range of testing services for our clients and we accept referrals for testing from local physician's offices. Our therapists have expertise in assessment for a variety of different needs including IVF and third-party reproduction procedures, bariatric surgery consultations, as well as assessment for learning difficulties and related issues of childhood. Dr. Oakes is a member of Resolve, the National Infertility Association, and has over 10 years experience working with women and couples dealing with infertility. In addition, the psychologists in our office have experience in pre-medical procedure consultation and psychoeducational assessment.
Dialectical Behavior Therapy Skills Group
Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) combines cognitive-behavioral techniques with concepts from Eastern philosophy. It is designed to address skill deficits in affect regulation, impulse control, assertiveness, and distress tolerance. Clients learn cognitive-behavioral and mindfulness skills to better identify and manage their emotions. They then practice applying these skills to better tolerate difficult life events and improve their ability to interact effectively with others.
The group meets once a week and may be available on Monday or Thursday evenings, Thursday or Friday mornings, or Saturdays, depending on interest and availability. It takes approximately 16 weeks to complete the 4 skills training modules: mindfulness, emotion regulation, distress tolerance, and interpersonal effectiveness. However, mastery of the skills generally requires 6 months or more of skills training. Although this therapy was originally designed to treat individuals with borderline personality disorder, it has since been proven effective in treating a variety of other disorders. This group is adults or adolescents with acute or long-standing difficulties with affect and impulse control, eating disorders, anger management problems, and self-destructive behavior. Because the group is primarily educational and skills based, clients are required to be in individual therapy as a condition of group membership.
